EDMONTON OPEN MEET REPORT About 300 swimmers from Alberta, BC, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and the Yukon gathered at the Kinsmen centre for the first long course competition of the year to race it up in the Edmonton Keyano Open. Highlight clubs were hosts Keyano, Calgary club Cascade and University of Calgary and the very strong representation from the top two programs in Quebec in the form of CAMO and Point Claire swim club. CAMO boasted Olympic medallist Katrine Savard and Olympian Mary-Sophie Harvey. Savard showed to be the class of the field in the butterfly events sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 fly events while Harvey was dominant across a broad range of events winning the 200 IM, 50, 100, 200 breaststrokes and 100, 200 backstroke events. The three-day competition provided fabulous racing opportunities for all swimmers with the three level finals format giving some younger swimmers many shots at finals swims in the same events as the senior athletes. Notable first time achievements from Keyano swimmers was Garrett Brendzan’s first ever Senior National cut in the 50 breast, Noah Thompson’s first ever Junior National cut in the 200 fly and Zach Bowie making his first Alberta Champs time. Coaches from all clubs were extremely pleased with the meet results as well as the exciting finals format which has brought in more clubs from across the country in the preparations for our Canadian Swimming Trials April 6-10 in Victoria. Extra thanks to allof our outstanding volunteers for putting on such a great meet. Next up for our Keyano swimmers is the Alberta Provincial Trials in Calgary, March 11-13 and then on to our Alberta Provincial Championships, March 17-20. Go Bears!
