DEVELOPMENT BEAR CUBS IN HOUSE TIME TRIALS
Given the limited racing opportunities for our development groups, EKSC has been working to find ways to offer time trial opportunities for our swimmers.

We have scheduled several time trial evenings throughout February to get the kids racing!

BRONZE and SILVER
All Bronze and Silver groups will have time trial evenings scheduled during their regular Wednesday evening training sessions (@Kinsmen). We will maintain the alternate week structure so we can provide more races for each group. The schedule will be as follows:

DatesPools attending
Wednesdays: February 16 & 23

Bear Cubs Mini-Meets -
Silver: 4:40-6:30pm
Bronze: 4:40-6:30pm
Meet on deck at 4:40pm and prepare to start swimming / racing at 5:00pm.

February 16:
Meadows
Terwillegar
Confed
YMCA (all swimmers Feb 16)

February 23:
Jasper Place
Royal Glenora
Bonnie Doon

  • These mini-meets will not require sign-ups; simply show up for practice based on your scheduled day.
  • Swimmers will be able to qualify for the Alberta Festival from these mini-meets! (If you are new to this, the Festival is the 1st level of Provincial Championships in Alberta, specifically for 10&under girls and 11&under boys - check out the Festival North standards here! Target group for Festival North is Silver and Gold swimmers of the appropriate ages).
  • A half-sized mini-meet will actually give the kids attending double the chances to race / swim on their day. After the enormous attendance at the October and November mini-meets, this is an excellent opportunity for swimmers who will now get more practice with their race skills.
  • Each swimmer will receive a results summary of their races after the meet.

After those two mini-meets, our plan is to return to fully regular program schedules starting on Wednesdays starting March 2.

GOLD

The rest of February:

  • We will continue training Gold on Wednesdays as in January - with a 4:40pm arrival time and a 5:00-6:30pm swim for all Gold swimmers every week.
  • Our plan is to return to the regular dryland start time of 4:15pm and a 5:00-6:30pm swim on March 2.
  • We have organised a couple of race nights within these sessions already
  • We have also organised some dual meets at Bonnie Doon over the month

EDMONTON OPEN MEET REPORT

About 300 swimmers from Alberta, BC, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and the Yukon gathered at the Kinsmen centre for the first long course competition of the year to race it up in the Edmonton Keyano Open.

Highlight clubs were hosts Keyano, Calgary club Cascade and University of Calgary and the very strong representation from the top two programs in Quebec in the form of CAMO and Point Claire swim club.

CAMO boasted Olympic medallist Katrine Savard and Olympian Mary-Sophie Harvey. Savard showed to be the class of the field in the butterfly events sweeping the 50, 100 and 200 fly events while Harvey was dominant across a broad range of events winning the 200 IM, 50, 100, 200 breaststrokes and 100, 200 backstroke events.

The three-day competition provided fabulous racing opportunities for all swimmers with the three level finals format giving some younger swimmers many shots at finals swims in the same events as the senior athletes. Notable first time achievements from Keyano swimmers was Garrett Brendzan’s first ever Senior National cut in the 50 breast, Noah Thompson’s first ever Junior National cut in the 200 fly and Zach Bowie making his first Alberta Champs time.

Coaches from all clubs were extremely pleased with the meet results as well as the exciting finals format which has brought in more clubs from across the country in the preparations for our Canadian Swimming Trials April 6-10 in Victoria. Extra thanks to allof our outstanding volunteers for putting on such a great meet.

Next up for our Keyano swimmers is the Alberta Provincial Trials in Calgary, March 11-13 and then on to our Alberta Provincial Championships, March 17-20.

Go Bears!
