DEVELOPMENT WEDNESDAYS

This week saw our Development swimmers from all the Keyano Satellite pools join together for their first weekly Wednesday session. It was fantastic to see over 140 Bronze, Silver and Gold swimmers come together as a Team. The session started with some outdoor games before all the swimmers headed inside to practice. Wednesdays are an important focus for the Club. For the Bronze groups we use these sessions to hand out progression stickers for their sticker charts and for Silver and Gold it is an opportunity for the swimmers to challenge themselves training and racing against different swimmers to their normal home pool group. Every 4 weeks we run our Bear Cubs Race Series which is an informal in-house swim meet where the swimmers have the opportunity to learn the 'road rules' of a swim meet and race.

CLUB HOODY

Given the success of last year's Hoody we have created a Season 2021-22 Club Hoody.  These hoody's are super comfortable and would make a great Christmas gift idea too!! The Hoody's come in Youth and Adult Sizes and will cost $47. There a few sample sizes in the Keyano office at the Kinsmen for you to try. The Hoody's seem to fit true to size. To order please fill out the following online form:

SPEEDO WEEK

This year Speedo is offering all EKSC members a 40% discount off racing suits and backpacks during the week 25-29th October. This is a fantastic opportunity to buy a heavily discounted race suit. Details of the sale has been sent to your member email address. Orders are to be filled on our online order form:

Just a reminder we do not encourage Bronze and Silver swimmers to purchase expensive race suits!

JUNIOR NATIONAL REPORT

by Alex Wallingford

Hello Junior National swimmers and families,

Our first month and a half of start up has rolled out very nicely. We have a number of new swimmers to the group who are bringing energy and enthusiasm to the training sessions. The returning swimmers are doing a great job of welcoming the new group as well as demonstrating what the training expectation is for the group. It continues to be a steep learning curve but all seem to be catching on to the new training requirements like getting times, adding stroke counts and times, monitoring their own stroke form during steady swim portions of practice and being sure to know their own best times.

Our training load has steadily built up each week and we will soon (next week) be resuming our 'Test Set' days, these will include a simple 400 kick for time, 18-20x100 on shortest rest possible, 10x100 fast 'snap shot' on medium rest and the always popular 800 free time trial. There will be more of course, we have already done 16x25 underwater kick a few times with the pace times now at :25/:30/:35/:40. There will be several more with Wednesday am being host to different 'off the blocks' super fast morning sprints or race simulations.

Winter is Coming

It's time to bust out those Keyano toques and warm clothes for after practice attire, never a good idea to be waiting outside in the cold with wet hair and thin clothing. Bundle up, get hats on heads and dress warm. Also it may also be a good idea to boost your vitamin C and D intake as days get darker and colder. Stay away from friends with runny noses and foamy mouths. Being sure to get your homework done early and on time helps reduce stress and keeps your sleeping hours up where they need to be. Teenagers need deep sleeps!

Swim Meets! Yay!

Next week is our own October Opener, the events are a 50 of each stroke plus finalists will race a 100IM. The next weekend we have the first Provincial series meet in Calgary which is a qualification meet. If swimmers are not qualified for that meet they will train as normal with Coach Desmond and prepare for the Poppy Invitational the next weekend here in Edmonton. More info on that meet is coming. We have received word from Swim Alberta that swimmers qualified for the previous Provincials will be automatically qualified for this year's meet regardless of any age group move up. Very good news there.

Odds and Ends

Coach Paul has made Tempo Trainers mandatory for his Sr National group and highly recommends them for the Jr National group. A number of you already have them, if you do not they can be purchased online at Team Aquatics Supplies. T-shirts and Caps, if you did not receive your T-shirt or swim cap or ball cap please see me. Stretching and rolling. Most Saturday am sessions we will be stretching and rolling out however swimmers need to be doing another 45-90 minutes of stretching/rolling on their own each week. It takes only 10-15 minutes a day to cover this essential recovery and mobility portion of being fit, toned, flexible and ready to perform both in training and on race day. Ankle bands are coming! If you do not have one please let me know, if you do, have them in your bag ready to go. NFL Football picks Week One Winner: Tanner Cole! ($5 Dairy Queen card), Week two picks are in!

That's all for now gang! See you all at the pool!

Coach Alex

REMINDER

Can we ask parents to please ensure their swimmers' equipment is clearly labeled. During last Wednesday's combined Development session there was a great deal of swim equipmnent left behind unnamed.
